INTERVIEWS / Q & A
Brand Director or Sales Director, Sales Rep, or even when I was a Graphic Designer no matter the title I'd take on, there's always one particular objective that I will always aim to hit at the very least and that's to tell the story.
The story is unique, so tell it. I applied this toward logo design and print work during my days as a graphic designer, and I apply this to brand direction and sales just the same. its all relative. This fundamental is key to successful brand building. Our agency continues to practice this philosophy pro-actively providing a voice and presence in the digital / social sphere adding dimension to the conversation the brand will have wherever someone encounters our brands.
We sit down and find the story behind Candor. Eddie Hahm shoots the shit with me about SS19 and some inspirations.
ML. What inspired our SS19 Forms Of Belief Collection?
EH. The idea of Forms of Belief can be tied to any system of thought, philosophy or religion-- it always filters down to one thing and that is the idea of belief itself, or faith. Now that ties into society today with trends and social currency and social status. What is real vs fake and those that choose to believe/follow or not-- hence our sub tagline "False Prophets & True Believers". This idea is sprinkled in the range within the styles-- certain ones that are very trend-driven and "now" and certain ones that are a bit more timeless and also certain styles that are very much "out-there".
ML. I believe that the hand of the fabrics you chose are a big part of this brands identity, what inspired the textures?
EH. First off, thank you for noticing that and I appreciate that you appreciate that quality to the range. As a designer, no matter what type of product I design, the fabrics always come down to depth. Washes and treatments can take fabrics a long way and we all use them as they are great tools. However nothing beats when the base fabric itself can tell an interesting story by the visual texture or hand feel. Its much more rewarding from a physical and visceral standpoint.
ML. You’re great at finding fabrics, and really good at your own textiles, what inspired you to design your own Palms, Shibori and Camo print patterns that were included?
EH. As a progression from our FW18 collection,"Transmission Emousse", (which essentially had almost no prints, save for one) it was a good time that we explore the visual aspect with the prints, tying back to our initial "capsule" collection of SS18, "Lucid Delusion" that was quite heavy with prints. Plus, Spring/Summer is always a more playful season so it lends itself quite well.
ML. Was there any music playing while you created this collection? What was it?
EH. Yes all kinds. Mind you it was so long ago that this was designed. But if I remember correctly, in no particular order or preference: Gang of Four, Joy Division, Skepta, YBN Nahmir, "Days Before The Rodeo" Travis, Chastity Belt, The Smiths, Tamaryn, Shabazz Palaces, Future, NxWorries
ML. Any relation to Bertrand Russell’s Journal, Forms Of Belief?
EH. Not directly but there are definitely overarching ideas that are the same as the concept to the season.
ML. Every brand has an ambassador. We understand Candor is designed as Unisex, what female celebrity / entertainer / model / influencer do you imagine wearing Candor as our ambassador?
EH. Great question and not to paint ourselves into a corner but I think Mette Towley or Tokimonsta. And although she is about to launch her own label Peggy Gou.
ML. What do you think are key elements that a Candor Man/Woman should know how to do well? Certain traits for example “Every man should know how to make a solid Old Fashion”
EH. How to love oneself as well as others.
ML. Thank you.
